Aerial Landscape
šŸ“·: Claire Grant, ‘Domestic Travel Restrictions May Be In Place’ 2021, Cyanotype and pen over laser print on paper (24 sheets), 59.5cm x 252cm

Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, Claire Grant studied photography at University of Canterbury, and currently lives in Meanjin (Brisbane). Using light as a medium, she specialises in alternative photography, forming environmental imprints of time and place.

This aerial landscape is both a panopticon and a self-portrait of life as a regional flight attendant, working during the pandemic to maintain a vital link for rural communities. Made of crew briefings collected over the past year, the printouts were carried in the artistā€™s pocket throughout her shift. They are then coated with cyanotype and assembled into this composite Panoglitch – a photographic technique created by manipulating the iPhone panorama function. Holding the phone stationary, instead of panning across the scene, uses the high-speed of the plane to form the image; resulting in glitches, stretched clouds and warped horizons.
