Aerial Landscape

Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, Claire Grant studied photography at University of Canterbury, and currently lives in Meanjin (Brisbane). Using light as a medium, she specialises in alternative photography, forming environmental imprints of time and place.

This aerial landscape is both a panopticon and a self-portrait of life as a regional flight attendant, working during the pandemic to maintain a vital link for rural communities. Made of crew briefings collected over the past year, the printouts were carried in the artist’s pocket throughout her shift. They are then coated with cyanotype and assembled into this composite Panoglitch – a photographic technique created by manipulating the iPhone panorama function. Holding the phone stationary, instead of panning across the scene, uses the high-speed of the plane to form the image; resulting in glitches, stretched clouds and warped horizons.
